MESL Undertakes Irish Reef Assessment

MESL has recently won an exciting desk-based contract to conduct a habitat mapping exercise for the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in Ireland. The aim of the project is to use pre-existing data to map the distribution and extent of Annex I reef habitat in near-shore Irish waters from the intertidal zone to a depth of 200m. An extensive literature review will highlight the ecological requirements and constraints of the habitat and its susceptibility to pressures and threats. The outputs of the project will be used to increase the knowledge base of intertidal and subtidal reef habitats in Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone, and will ultimately contribute towards the assessment of conservation status required by the EU Habitats Directive.
